Who is Required to Take the Tests?

If you desire to be certified as a Master Teacher in Texas, you may take the corresponding TExMaT test if you meet all of the guidelines for that test. See Approval to Test.

Master Reading Teacher (MRT)
If you have a classroom teaching certificate but not a Reading Specialist certificate, you must complete a TEA-approved MRT preparation program and take the MRT test.

If you already have a current Texas Reading Specialist certificate, you must complete a TEA-approved MRT preparation program, but you do not need to take the MRT test.

Master Mathematics Teacher (MMT) or Master Science Teacher ( MST)
If you have a current Texas Teaching Certificate, you must complete a course of study in an MMT or MST program and pass the Texas Examinations for Master Teachers (TExMaT) MMT or MST test at the appropriate teaching level.

Master Technology Teacher (MTT)
Candidates who have a current Texas Technology Applications or Technology Education certificates are required to take and pass the MTT test to obtain the MTT Certificate. All candidates, regardless of certificates held, must complete a TEA-approved MTT preparation program and pass the MTT test.

Approval to Test

Educators/candidates may take a TExMaT test if one of the following criteria is met:

Educator Preparation Programs
Educators fulfilling TExMaT requirements in an SBEC/TEA-approved Texas Educator Preparation Program must receive approval to take an examination. After acceptance and approval to test from their Educator Preparation Program, these candidates will acquire a TEA ID number by completing an Educator Profile on the SBEC website.

  • University Post Baccalaureate - a program that may be offered to an individual who already holds at least a bachelor's degree
  • University Alternative Certification Program - an Alternative Certification Program offered by a university
  • Alternative Certification Program - a non-traditional Educator Preparation Program for teachers and administrators who hold a bachelor's degree or higher that may involve university coursework or other professional development experiences as well as intense mentoring and supervision during the candidate's first year in the role of educator

TExMaT Eligibility

Master Reading Teacher (MRT)

  • You hold a current Texas teaching certificate.
  • You have at least three years of teaching experience.
  • You are enrolled in, or you have completed, a TEA-approved MRT preparation program.

NOTE: If you have a current Texas Reading Specialist Certificate, you must complete a TEA-approved MRT preparation program, but you do not need to take the MRT test. Note also that a classroom teaching certificate does not exempt you from taking the MRT test.

Master Mathematics Teacher (MMT)

  • You hold a current Texas teaching certificate.
  • You have at least three years of teaching experience.
  • You are enrolled in, or you have completed, a TEA-approved MMT preparation program for the appropriate grade level.

Master Science Teacher (MST)

  • You hold a current Texas teaching certificate.
  • You have at least three years of teaching experience.
  • You are enrolled in, or you have completed, a TEA-approved MST preparation program at the appropriate grade level.

Master Technology Teacher (MTT)

  • You hold a current Texas teaching certificate.
  • You have at least three years of teaching experience.
  • You are enrolled in, or you have completed, a TEA-approved MTT preparation program.
